Women drivers are road-ragers too

Women have been statistically proven to be safer drivers and submit few less expensive claims in comparison to men and are therefore benefiting form lower premiums. Could this be about to change as new research shows women are becoming as fast and aggressive as men?

A study to be published in the near future reports that women are driving faster, collecting more tickets for speeding and dangerous driving than ever before. Women are becoming more impatient and taking their anger out on fellow drivers. Home Office figures show a jump in up to 50% in the number of women getting traffic convictions in the last eight years. The gap between men and women is narrowing according to Peter Marsh of the Social Issues Research Centre.

It has been estimated that up to 2.5 million people have unexpired points from speeding offences. The reason for the sharp increase in people being caught speeding is that there are currently around 4,500 speed cameras in the UK.

Once caught speeding drivers generally get three points on their license and have to pay a fine. They also risk having to make a visit to the law courts. On top of these costs there is the rise in their insurance premium. Although insurers claim not to be cracking down on speeding drivers, evidence suggests that being caught speeding will have detrimental effects on insurance premiums. Research by insurers has shown that a speeding conviction can on average add up to ?196 to the premium. A second fine will increase the premium by 30% (?254) and a third can cause premiums to rise by a further 60% (?406). If a person is convicted a fourth time they should expect to lose their licence. Those who are disqualified from driving are effectively immobilised.

By law you have to inform your insurer of any penalty points that have been added to your license or any DVLA codes that have been contravened. If you are convicted you should expect your premium to rise. The only way to avoid an increase in your premiums is to not speed in the first place!

Travel Agent cover warnings

Too many UK travellers waste millions of pounds on their travel insurance buying hugely expensive premiums from travel agents. Consumers make a considerable saving on their travel insurance if they purchase it from an insurance company either over the phone or on the Internet.

From the 14th January 2005, the insurance industry falls under the regulation of the Financial Services Authority, where as travel agents are exempt from this regulation. The new regulation will create two groups of policy holders who are either protected by the FSA or not protected by the FSA. Traditionally, travel agents over charge for peripheral products such as travel insurance which according to many consumer watchdogs defies logic.

Consumers have been continually advised to search the market for cheaper travel cover, with the introduction of the new regulation that suggestion is even more important. If a customer buys an unregulated product from the travel agent they will not have the support of the FSA or the Financial Ombudsmen Service who have the power to investigate insurers, brokers and intermediaries and take appropriate action.

MSN's insurance provider, Insurancewide offers an annual, multi-trip policy for a family of 2 adults and 3 children under 18 for £85 (inc. US and Canada). Thomas Cook's annual family insurance policy costs £215 and does not provide the same level of cover. That's a saving of £130.
