Travel Agent cover warnings

Too many UK travellers waste millions of pounds
on their travel insurance buying hugely expensive premiums from travel
agents. Consumers make a considerable saving on their travel insurance
if they purchase it from an insurance company either over the phone or
on the Internet.
From the 14th January 2005, the insurance industry falls under the regulation
of the Financial Services Authority, where as travel agents are exempt
from this regulation. The new regulation will create two groups of policy
holders who are either protected by the FSA or not protected by the FSA.
Traditionally, travel agents over charge for peripheral products such
as travel insurance which according to many consumer watchdogs defies
logic.
Consumers have been continually advised to search the market for cheaper
travel cover, with the introduction of the new regulation that suggestion
is even more important. If a customer buys an unregulated product from
the travel agent they will not have the support of the FSA or the Financial
Ombudsmen Service who have the power to investigate insurers, brokers
and intermediaries and take appropriate action.
