The European Health Insurance Health Card replaced the E111 form on 1st September
2005. It entitles you and the rest of your family access to free or reduced
cost emergency medical treatment in the European Union and in Iceland, Liechtenstein,
Norway and Switzerland. You can pick up the EHIC form from your local post office
or directly from the Department of Health (www.dh.gov.uk/travellers, 0845 606
2030).
Key features of the EHIC - The card is valid for 3 to 5 years and covers medical treatment during
your trip due to illness or accident
- Any treatment received will be at the same level of state-provided emergency
treatment of the country you are visiting.
- State-provided cover in foreign countries may not cover all the things
you would expect to receive free of charge from the NHS.
- Private treatment is generally not included.
- It also covers any treatment you need for chronic disease or pre-existing
medical conditions. (For kidney dialysis or oxygen therapy, you would need to
make arrangements in advance.)
What the EHIC does not cover
- An EHIC form will not cover all medical costs or any repatriation costs.
- It is no substitute for a comprehensive travel insurance policy, which will
cover non-medical related issues that may occur on your trip. It will not provide
cover for stolen or damaged possessions, delays to your trip or for personal
liability.
If you are planning a trip to Europe to escape the winter 'blues' don't soley
rely on your European Health Insurance Card. Make sure you have invested in
a good travel insurance policy that will cover you for all eventualities.
