Car Insurance Groups Explained

Insuring your car should not be a tricky business but being aware of how insurance groups work will help you determine if you could save money by upgrading your car to a cheaper group. We will outline the various insurance groups and once explained you should have a better idea of the best group for you to aim for with your car budget.

Which Group is Your Car In

Car insurance groups can be explained in terms of a number between 1-50. 1 represents the cheapest group to insure your car while 50 represents the most expensive group. The more environmentally friendly a car is then the lower number group it will be classed in.

A very quick and easy way to check which insurance category your current vehicle comes under is to visit the group calculator on the Parkers website at www.parkers.co.uk/cars/insurance/car-insurance-groups. You can input the make and model here and the age group. You will then get back your insurance group ranking.

This is a great tool when you are looking to upgrade your car as you can easily see if potential cars belong to a cheaper car insurance group. There is also a drop down menu on the calculator with all 50 groups where you can view the types of cars that are in each group. Unsurprisingly, group 50 is littered with high performance cars from Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Lotus and a number of Jaguar offerings.

Group 1 has more modest offerings and includes cars that are the easiest on the environment. Some examples of group 1 cars include the Fiat Panda, Volkswagen Fox and Citroen C1.
